.for lack of a better word, balthazar was castiel's lieutenant in heaven. he very well could've lead his own garrison, but chose to stick by his brother's side. his excuse is he was far too lazy for that much responsibility.
.although castiel might believe balthazar ran from heaven for his own selfish reasons, he actually left because he was on raphael's hit list. he knew raphael wasn't above below-the-belt tactics and got the hell out before his dastardly, older brother could use him against castiel. he took the weapons of heaven as a final fuck you.
.balthazar doesn't like humans, plain and simple, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like what they get up to. generally, balthazar despises what humanity has done as a whole to each other and to his Father's world, but otherwise he thinks they really know how to party. they're also pretty ingenious when it comes to pleasing yourself, and not just in a sexual way.
.angel's don't really experience sensations like humans do, so when he takes on his meatsuit, balthazar tries to get the most out of what the human body encasing him feels. instead of having single-partner sex, he has orgies; instead of drinking one beer, he drinks an entire bar dry, etc. etc.
vessel.
.balthazar's vessel is a washed up writer who had once been devout and somewhat successful. then his only family, his brother, died, which caused him to drink his career away. he turned away from religion and from everyone else in his life to slowly destroy himself. after almost dying due to alcohol poisoning, he prays one last time and balthazar answers it.
.instead of giving the man a choice between residing with the angel in his body or just being sent on his way, balthazar levels with the guy and bluntly tells him that he pretty much won't be getting his body back. the writer seems eerily okay with this, only asking that he be sent to be by his brother's side. balthazar shows one last act of mercy and burns the soul of the body, sending the man to be with his family.
